History of Foot Zoning

The use of feet to address the many issues we encounter with our bodies is not a new idea by any means. Evidence of such practices has popped up in the histories of almost every culture- including, but not limited to, Egypt, India, China, Europe, Africa, and even our own Native America. That many thousands of years of practice is nothing to sneeze at, so who are we to reject their experience?

Foot Zoning as we practice it today is based on the ten zones of our bodies that were mapped by a Connecticut surgeon, Dr. William H. FitzGerald in the early 1900s. His explorations discovered that applying pressure to areas of the body associated with an ailing organ or part not only deadened pain, but actually addressed the underlying cause of said pain! It is those underlying causes that we as Certified Foot Zone Therapists target as we squeeze, press, rub, and otherwise manipulate zones of the feet that these pioneers of Foot Zoning have tracked to all parts of the human anatomy.

The mysteries of the human body were uncovered further as others built on the foundations set by Dr. FitzGerald. In the 1930s, Eunice Ingham, a chiropractor and physiotherapist, worked to map out the reflex points of the human body and discovered that all areas of the body were reflected in various points of the feet. She continued to develop this discovery until she had the entire body mapped and charted into the zones of our feet we use in our therapies today. In England, at the same time that Ms. Ingham worked to develop her discoveries, physiologist Sir Charles Ersdal developed into the secrets of the nervous system and gave us the understanding we have today of how the body responds to stimulus applied to various body parts. We owe our therapies today to these pioneers and look forward to the discoveries to come in the future as we as humans continue to inquire and explore
